If you grew up on classic children adventure movies, then make time in your schedule to see RIDDLE OF FIRE.
This creative, neo-fairytale follows the adventures of three adolescent heroes on their quest to retrieve a blueberry pie recipe for their mother, in exchange for the password she’s put on the television. Seems simple enough, but their quest soon causes a run-in with The Enchanted Blade, whose leader is a witch. The trio join forces with the witch’s daughter, and the newly-formed foursome battle their way through the woodland in an attempt to complete their mission.
Shot on 16mm film, writer-director Weston Razooli’s first feature captures the extraordinary way kids experience the world, but masterfully balances the children’s adventure elements with the film’s more adult themes. As in any fairytale, the danger is counterbalanced with instants of fantasy.
“There’s this tone that I call a ‘dark ’70s sci-fi fantasy vibe’ in children’s films that get a bit scary, which I think is important for an adventure film,” Razooli says. “I was making a movie for myself, but it’s for all ages. ’Riddle’ contains a piece of all my other scripts: it’s kind of a motorcycle movie, a fantasy film, a party movie and a folklore movie.”
Is RIDDLE OF FIRE intended for kids or adults? We’re not really sure, and we’re also not sure it matters.
“The thing Riddle of Fire does best is capture the innocence and freedom of childhood. A time when everything was an adventure, nothing could ever go wrong, and your friends were everything. It makes you feel like a child yourself and is a blast to watch.” Germain Lussier io9.com
“[Its] subtle undercurrent of melancholy, as well as its passing commentary about the way technology is depriving kids from living out any true adventures make it more substantial than the superficial nostalgic throwback it initially seems to be.” Elena Lazic Cineuropa
“With its nostalgic quality and plucky children protagonists, Riddle of Fire feels right at home alongside classic kids’ adventure films… However, its dreaminess still sets it apart from its predecessors, making for a fiercely original fantasy tale.” Belen Edwards Mashable
