What is the 48 Hour Movie Making Challenge

Gather some friends and form a team or if you’re really brave you can even participate solo. We’ll have a meeting between 6 and 7 pm on Friday September 9th at Paved Arts where we’ll go over the rules and give everyone a chance to meet. Teams are given a genre, prop and line of dialogue to use and will then have 48 hours to write, shoot and edit their film, and submit their film. All films that are completed before the deadline and meet the guidelines of the challenge will be screened at 2pm on Sunday September 25 at the Broadway Theatre.

Initial Meeting

The meeting runs from 6 and 7 pm on Friday September 9th at Paved Arts (424 20th Street West). The first 30-40 minutes of the meeting are your chance to meet the other participants. If you are solo, we can try and help you to join one of the other teams. We recommend teams but we have had some films completed buy solo participants. The remainder of the meeting will consist of going over the rules and providing the genre, name of a prop, and line of dialogue to use.

Rules

1. Completed shorts MUST be placed in an envelope. Your envelope must be labeled clearly with your TEAM NAME & TITLE.

2. FINISHED FORMAT: **Finished shorts must be submitted one of TWO ways.
As a self-contained full resolution h.264 mp4, with no proprietary codecs – supplied on DVD or USB stick. Please test before you submit.
Private/secure password protected HD (720p or 1080p) Vimeo / Youtube link. The link and password must be provided and have been properly tested.

3. SLATE/INTRO CREDITS: The Video must have 10 seconds of black followed by 10 second introduction credit reading: Team Name, Title, Genre, Prop & Line of Dialogue. No colour bar.

4. ASPECT RATIO: All films are to be shot at a 16:9 aspect ratio. The projector will not be switched to accommodate any projects shot in 4:3. However, if you do shoot 4:3, you must supply the final video window-boxed in a 16:9 file, otherwise your video may appear stretched.

5. During the official competition period, all creativity will take place, including but not limited to: Writing the script, Rehearsing, Shooting and Editing. Nailing your genre is essential.

6. Open source and Royalty Free music may be used in your short film as long as you have the rights to include it.

7. We strongly encourage registered teams to begin the following work, prior to the official competition period:
Securing Equipment, Securing Locations, Organizing Crew, Organizing Cast, Securing Costumes and Props

8. RUNNING TIME: The length of your short, including introduction (20 seconds including black and slate) and closing credits, can be anywhere between 3 – 7 minutes. Total combined credits can be no longer than 30 seconds. Do not feel like you need to use the full time allotted. Shorter can often work out better!
9. All cast & crew must be volunteers.

10. DROP OFF OF COMPLETED SHORT Sunday September 11 before 7pm address provided at the meeting.

10. LATE FILM ENTRIES: Films received on Sunday after 7pm will be screened but are not eligible for any awards. To get your ineligible film screened you MUST hand something in by Sunday 10pm. Late entries will still be eligible for an audience award. Anything arriving after 10pm will be disqualified.

11. ABSOLUTELY NO ADVANCE SCREENINGS OR CHEATING: Any team found to have cheated in some way, will be disqualified from any award and the screening. There is no exception to advance screenings of your film. Your short must only be premiered at the SFFF screening. This means NO cast and crew screening either. Please just tuck it away and save it for the event. Team leaders will be made responsible. This is way more fun this way if your film is a premier. We promise.

12. After your film has been screened as a part of SFFF’s 48 Hour Film Challenge you are free to use it as you please. If you are proud of the film, we strongly suggest submitting it to other film festivals all over the world. We have programmed shorts that were created for other 48 Hour film challenges in previous years.

13. Any type of video or film camera may be used but we strongly suggest you shoot in HD to help make your project look as good as possible. There is no limit to the number of cameras that can be used.

14. Have fun and make the best film possible!!
